RW2 comes off the whole Lumix line, and unusually it spans two quite different systems: the Micro Four Thirds G and GH bodies — the GH5, GH6 and GH7, the G9 and G9 II — and the full-frame S series, including the S1, S5 and S5 II. Same extension, very different files underneath: MFT frames are typically 12-bit and around 20 MB, while an S-series full-frame file is 14-bit and can be twice that. Panasonic's earlier compacts used a plain .RAW extension before the switch to .RW2, so very old Lumix files may not match.

Because GH bodies are so widely used for video, a lot of RW2 files are stills grabbed alongside a shoot by people who keep no photo software installed at all — this page needs none. Decoding runs in your browser with the embedded preview as a fallback. Olympus ORF and Fujifilm RAF have their own converters, and RAW to JPG takes a mixed folder.

The Micro Four Thirds G and GH bodies (GH5, GH6, GH7, G9, G9 II and others), the full-frame S series (S1, S5, S5 II), and LX and FZ compacts. Very old Lumix models used a plain .RAW extension before Panasonic moved to .RW2.

Because the extension covers two sensor formats. A Micro Four Thirds frame is usually 12-bit and around 20 MB; a full-frame S-series file is 14-bit and can be roughly double that. Both are .RW2.

You lose editing latitude rather than visible detail. The RW2 holds 12- or 14-bit data against the JPG's 8, so the JPG looks the same on screen but won't tolerate heavy exposure or white-balance correction afterwards. Keep the originals if you plan to edit.
