AI removes the background on your device and exports a transparent PNG. It works best when the subject and background are clearly separated (a person, product, or object); busy backgrounds, fine hair, and low-contrast edges can leave artifacts. The AI model downloads on first use, then is cached.
What downloads the first time you use it
The removal is done by IS-Net, a segmentation model, run through IMG.LY's open-source background-removal library. This page uses the library's default "medium" model, a half-precision (fp16) build of about 88 MB, plus the ONNX Runtime WebAssembly engine of about 12 MB that executes it. Both are fetched from the library's own content server when you convert your first image, and the progress bar during that wait is the download. Your photo is not part of that request — it is only read on your device.
Within the same tab, the model stays loaded, so the next image starts without downloading anything. The site's offline cache keeps the model files after that first download, so later visits start sooner and work without a connection. Clearing your browser's site data removes them, and the next run downloads them again.
How the cut-out is made
The model does not work on your photo at full size. It works on a 1024 × 1024 pixel copy — stretched or squashed to a square whatever its real shape — and predicts, for each of those pixels, how likely it is to belong to the foreground. That mask is then scaled back up to your image's real dimensions and used as the transparency. The colours of your subject are not altered; only the transparency changes.
This explains most of what you see. The PNG has the same width and height as the photo you put in, but the edge of the cut-out is only as detailed as a 1024-pixel mask. On a large photo, fine detail — stray hairs, fur, lace, the gaps between fingers — gets a softer edge than the rest of the image, and a very wide or very tall image loses the most mask detail along its long side.
Getting a cleaner result
Crop close to the subject before you start. A product that fills most of the frame occupies more of the 1024-pixel mask, so its edges are traced more finely than the same product sitting small in the middle of a wide shot. Your phone's built-in crop tool is enough. Contrast helps as much as framing: a subject that differs clearly from what is behind it in colour or brightness separates more cleanly than a dark coat against a dark wall. If one photo of the subject gives a poor edge, a second shot against a plainer backdrop usually beats any amount of retouching.
Putting the subject on a white or new background
The download is a PNG named after your file with "-no-bg" added, and it is often larger than the photo you started with, because PNG is lossless. When the transparent PNG is what you need — for a design tool or a slide — you are done.
Many marketplaces want the product on plain white rather than on transparency. Send the PNG to PNG to JPG, which fills transparent areas with white: the result is a white-background product shot in a small, widely accepted file. "Continue with another tool" under the result offers it, and moves the file within the page without uploading it. What happens to the photo's metadata
The PNG is written fresh from pixel data, so the EXIF block of a phone photo — camera model, capture time and GPS location — is not carried into it. That is useful when the cut-out is going onto a public listing or profile. Keep the original if you need that information later.
What to do when background removal fails
"File too large" means the image is over this tool's 25 MB limit; scale it down with Resize Image first. An error beginning "Invalid format" means the file is not PNG, JPEG or WebP — the only types the model's decoder accepts. HEIC photos from an iPhone and AVIF images need converting first, with HEIC to PNG or AVIF to PNG.
If the first run fails while the progress bar is still moving through the download, the model could not be fetched: you are offline, the connection dropped, or a network filter is blocking the model's server (staticimgly.com). Reconnect and convert again. The model runs on your processor through WebAssembly, so an older phone can take noticeably longer than a laptop. The Cancel button only takes effect between files, so to stop an image that is already being processed, reload the page.
