WAV is uncompressed PCM: the raw samples, with no encoding applied. A minute of CD-quality stereo is about 10 MB, so an hour-long recording runs to well over half a gigabyte. That is why WAV is the working format in every audio editor and almost never the format anything gets sent in.
Because the source is lossless, this is a first-generation encode — the cleanest kind of conversion to MP3 there is. At 192 kbps or above the result is transparent for speech and close to it for music, and the file will be roughly a tenth of the size.
Choose the bitrate for the destination: 128 kbps is fine for a spoken-word recording where size matters, 192 for general listening, 320 when you want headroom and the size still fits. Keep the WAV if you will edit again; every subsequent edit should start from the lossless original, not from the MP3.
