File Transmute's OCR uses a WebAssembly text-recognition engine that runs locally — unlike other OCR tools that upload your scans to a server. Drop an image, and the readable text is extracted on your machine. The engine downloads once on first use (no image data is ever sent), then works offline.

Good to know
OCR reads clear printed text very reliably. Accuracy drops on heavy handwriting, low-contrast or blurry images, and unusual fonts — a sharp, well-lit image gives the best result. Everything runs on-device, so the image is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
It is strongest on Latin-alphabet languages — English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and similar. Scripts that look very different from the training data (for example Arabic, Chinese, or Devanagari) are far less reliable, and we would rather you knew that before trusting the output.
Not reliably. The model is trained on printed type; cursive and casual handwriting produce output you cannot trust without checking every word. Printed text, screenshots, and clean scans are where OCR genuinely shines.
No — and this is the whole point. The recognition model runs on your own device, so the receipt, payslip, ID, or medical letter you are extracting text from never leaves your browser. Most OCR sites upload the image to their servers.
Screenshots and native digital text are near-perfect. Flatbed scans of printed pages are very reliable. Phone photos of receipts and notes usually work well if the lighting is even and the page is flat — shadows, glare, and blur are what cost you accuracy.
