About File Transmute
File Transmute is a free file converter built on a simple principle: your files should never have to leave your device just to change their format. Most cloud converters upload everything you give them. We do the opposite — conversion happens in your browser.
Private by default
In-browser conversions never upload your file. A live panel on every page instruments the network and shows "0 bytes uploaded" — and the tools keep working with your Wi‑Fi off.
On-device engineering
We use the browser's own capabilities — Canvas, pdf.js, pdf-lib, and WebAssembly builds of FFmpeg and ML models — to do real conversion work locally, not on a server.
Built on open standards
Around 70 tools across PDF, images, audio/video, documents, and on-device AI, plus a documented developer API with signed webhooks and API keys.
Honest about the exceptions
A few conversions (e.g. high-fidelity Office, EPS) genuinely need a server. We label those clearly: the file is sent over an encrypted connection, converted, and deleted right after.
How it works
When you drop a file, File Transmute reads it into memory in your browser and transforms it there — rendering PDF pages, re-encoding images, demuxing audio, running OCR — using well-established open-source engines compiled to run on the web. The result is handed back to you as a download. Because nothing is transmitted, there's no upload wait, no daily limit, and no copy of your document on anyone's server. You can read more in our privacy guide.
What we offer
Around 70 conversion tools — the full catalog spans PDF, image, document, audio/video, and on-device AI tools — all free, with no sign-up. Developers can automate conversions through our REST API.
Our commitment
We don't sell or store your files, we don't require an account for the free tools, and we're transparent about the rare cases that need a server. Privacy isn't a policy page here — it's the architecture, and you can verify it live on any tool page.
