FLAC is lossless. It compresses to roughly half or 60% of the equivalent WAV while remaining bit-perfect, so decoding one gives you exactly the samples that were recorded — which makes it the format of choice for archiving a CD rip or a master.

That also makes this conversion different from converting one lossy format to another. There is no generation loss to worry about: the MP3 you get is the first lossy encoding this audio has been through, so at 256 or 320 kbps the result is genuinely close to indistinguishable on ordinary equipment. Convert freely, and keep the FLAC as your master.

Expect a large size drop — a 30 MB FLAC track becoming a 7 MB MP3 is typical, which is the entire point when the destination is a phone, a car, or an upload limit. Album art and tags usually carry across, but check them if the library matters to you.

Best for

  • Shrinking lossless FLAC files to fit a phone or car stereo
  • Converting a music library to a format every device plays
  • Making tracks small enough to email or upload

Good to know

Converts lossless FLAC to widely-compatible MP3. MP3 is lossy, so the file is much smaller but drops some detail most listeners won't notice at a good bitrate — keep the FLAC if you want a pristine archive. Choose a higher bitrate for music, lower for spoken word.

Frequently asked questions

Some — FLAC is lossless and MP3 is lossy, so a little detail is dropped to shrink the file. At a good bitrate it's inaudible for normal listening, but keep the FLAC as your master copy.

Typically several times smaller than the FLAC, which is why MP3 is the standard for phones, car stereos, and sharing.

Higher (256–320 kbps) for music where fidelity matters; lower is fine for podcasts or audiobooks. Higher bitrate means better sound and a bigger file.
