The conversion runs on the File Converts server using a real spreadsheet engine, because laying out a workbook correctly means evaluating formulas, honouring print areas, page breaks, frozen panes, number formats and conditional formatting. A browser library can read cell values; it cannot reproduce Excel's pagination, and a report that breaks across pages in the wrong place is worse than no PDF at all.
Your workbook is uploaded over an encrypted connection, converted, and then deleted, with uploads capped at 200 MB (100 MB without an account). Set your print area and page breaks in Excel first: this honours them, and a wide sheet with no print area set will paginate the way Excel would print it, not the way it looks on screen.
