NEF to JPG Converter

Nikon's NEF files hold everything the sensor saw, which is why they're big and why almost nothing but photo software will open them. Convert them to JPG here, without uploading a thing.

NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) covers the whole Nikon line — the D750, D850, D780, D500 and D7500 DSLRs, and the Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8 and Z9 mirrorless bodies. Depending on the camera and how it's configured a NEF holds 12-bit or 14-bit data and may be uncompressed, lossless compressed, or lossy compressed, which is why two files from the same shoot can differ in size by a factor of two. Nikon's own NX Studio reads all of it but is a full desktop install, and the Z8 and Z9 added High Efficiency (HE and HE*) raw, a newer variant older converters often won't touch.

Conversion runs on your own device with a WebAssembly RAW engine and the embedded preview as a fallback, so nothing is uploaded and there's no daily limit. Compact Coolpix cameras write .NRW, a close relative, and those work here too — or drop a mixed set into RAW to JPG.

Best for

  • Getting shareable JPGs off a Nikon card without installing NX Studio
  • Opening NEF files on a borrowed or work computer
  • Converting a batch before sending to a lab or client

Good to know

High Efficiency (HE/HE*) raw from the Z8 and Z9 is the most likely to fall back to the embedded preview rather than a full demosaic. The result is still full resolution, but it carries the Picture Control that was set on the camera.

Frequently asked questions

Both are Nikon RAW. NEF comes from the DSLR and Z-series bodies; NRW is the variant Coolpix compacts write. This converter accepts both.

No. NX Studio is free and gives you Nikon's own colour rendering, but it's a large desktop install. If you only need a viewable JPG, converting here takes a few seconds and installs nothing.

Nikon offers uncompressed, lossless compressed and lossy compressed raw, and 12-bit or 14-bit depth. Those settings can nearly halve or double the file size, and the Z8 and Z9 add High Efficiency options that shrink files further.

Close, but not always identical. The camera's rear screen shows a preview with your Picture Control applied. A full RAW decode is more neutral by design — that neutrality is the point of shooting raw, and it's what gives you room to edit.

No. Everything runs in your browser on your own device.
