NEF is Nikon's RAW format, produced by Nikon DSLRs and Z-series mirrorless cameras (and saved as NRW on some Coolpix models). Like all RAW files it captures the full sensor readout — ideal for editing, but unreadable to most apps, social platforms, and phones. Converting NEF to JPG produces a photo you can post, email, or print anywhere.
