DNG is Adobe's open raw format, published in 2004 and based on TIFF/EP, and it's now the most widely produced raw format there is — largely because it isn't only cameras writing it. Leica's M, Q and SL bodies output DNG natively, as do Ricoh and Pentax, Sigma's fp, and DJI drones. More significantly, an iPhone shooting Apple ProRAW writes DNG, and so do Android phones in raw mode, which means a lot of DNG files now come from a pocket rather than a camera bag. DNG also serves as an escape hatch: Adobe's free DNG Converter turns unreadable proprietary raws into DNG so older software can open them.
Because the spec requires a full-size embedded preview, DNG is the most reliable raw format to convert. It runs entirely in your browser, which matters more than usual for phone photos since they carry location data. Camera-specific originals convert with the CR3, NEF or ARW tools, or all together with RAW to JPG.
