CR3 arrived in 2018 with the EOS M50 and is what every Canon mirrorless body writes today: the R5, R6 and R6 Mark II, R3, R7, R8, R10, R50, RP and R100, plus late DSLRs like the 90D, 250D and 1D X Mark III. The container is a genuine break from CR2 — it compresses more efficiently and adds C-RAW, a smaller lossy option — and that break is why so many people end up looking for a converter. Adobe added CR3 support in Camera Raw 11, so anyone on a perpetual CS6 licence, an older Lightroom 6, or third-party software that stopped updating simply cannot open these files. The usual advice is to install Adobe's DNG Converter and convert twice.

Good to know
Where the decoder can't fully demosaic a particular CR3 — C-RAW files and very new bodies are the likeliest cases — it falls back to the full-size JPEG preview embedded in the file. You still get a usable image at full resolution, but it reflects the picture style set in-camera.
