If your converted audio sounds worse, it's almost always one of two things: you converted to a low bitrate, or you re-converted an already-compressed (lossy) file. At a high enough bitrate, converting to MP3 sounds transparent to most ears — here's how to keep the quality.
What bitrate actually controls
Bitrate (kbps) is how much data per second the audio uses — higher bitrate means more detail and a larger file. Convert to 320 kbps MP3 and most people can't tell it from the source; convert to 96 kbps and you'll hear it thin out, especially in cymbals and vocals.
The other culprit: re-compressing lossy audio
MP3, AAC and M4A are lossy — they've already discarded data to save space. Converting one lossy format to another (or the same one again) discards more each time, so quality drops. Convert from the original or highest-quality source whenever you can, not from a copy of a copy.
How to keep quality when converting to MP3
- Choose a high bitrate — 256–320 kbps for music.
- Convert from a lossless source (WAV or FLAC) when you have one.
- Convert once, not repeatedly.
- For archiving, keep a lossless copy and export MP3s from it as needed.
Lossless to MP3 is fine; MP3 to WAV won't restore quality
Converting WAV or FLAC to MP3 at a high bitrate sounds excellent. But converting an MP3 back to WAV can't restore detail that was already discarded — it just makes a much bigger file of the same quality.

Generation loss is the usual cause
Converting between two lossy formats decodes audio that has already had detail discarded, then discards more. An M4A to MP3 conversion is a second generation; converting that MP3 again is a third. Each pass is individually subtle and they accumulate, which is why a file that has been through several tools sounds hollow in a way no single conversion explains.
What to check
- Bitrate: 128 kbps is where artefacts become audible on decent headphones. 192 or higher for anything you care about
- Sample rate: converting 44.1 kHz to 22 kHz halves the frequency range and dulls everything
- Mono downmix, which silently discards the stereo image
- Whether you are converting the original or a copy that was already converted once
Always go back to the highest-quality source you have. If the original is lossless — WAV or FLAC — convert from that rather than from an MP3 someone made earlier.
