Does Converting HEIC to JPG Reduce Quality?

Converting HEIC to JPG causes a small, usually invisible quality loss, because JPG is a lossy format and the image is re-encoded once. At a high quality setting you won't notice a difference on a normal photo — but the JPG will usually be larger than the original HEIC, and you shouldn't convert, edit, and re-convert the same image over and over.

The short answer

Yes, slightly — but in practice it's invisible. HEIC is already a compressed format; converting to JPG re-encodes the picture one more time at whatever quality you choose. At a high setting, the difference is imperceptible on a typical photo viewed or printed normally.

Why any loss happens at all

Both HEIC and JPG are lossy formats — they discard some data to shrink the file. Every time you save a lossy image, a little detail is lost. One conversion means one re-encode, which means one small, usually unnoticeable loss. The real problem is repetition: convert, edit, save, convert again, and those losses stack up. That's called generation loss, and it's what actually degrades a photo over time — not a single careful conversion.

Will the file get bigger or smaller?

Usually bigger. HEIC's HEVC codec is more efficient than JPG, so the JPG copy is often larger than the original HEIC at similar quality. That extra size is simply the price of a format that opens everywhere.

How to keep quality high

  • Choose a high quality setting when you convert.
  • Convert once, from the original HEIC — not from a copy of a copy.
  • If you plan to edit heavily, convert to lossless PNG first, edit, then export.
  • Keep your HEIC originals as the master copy.

What about orientation and metadata?

Orientation is applied automatically, so your photos come out upright rather than sideways. Some metadata — like location and capture details — may not carry across to the JPG. Why the JPG can be larger than the HEIC

This surprises people: the file gets bigger while the quality gets slightly worse. HEIC uses far more efficient compression, so it stores the same image in roughly half the space. Converting re-encodes the picture with JPEG's older, less efficient scheme, and to keep the loss invisible the encoder needs more bytes than HEIC did. You are paying in size for compatibility, twice over.

Keeping the loss invisible

  • Convert once, from the original. Repeatedly re-encoding the same photo is what visibly degrades it
  • Keep the HEIC as the master if you might edit the shot later
  • Do any editing before converting, not after, so the edit works on the richer 10-bit data
  • Judge on a real screen at full size, not a thumbnail
