HEIC and JPG both store photos, but HEIC (the format iPhones use) is about half the file size at the same quality and supports higher colour depth and transparency — while JPG is older, larger, and works absolutely everywhere. Which is smaller, HEIC or JPG?
HEIC uses the modern HEVC codec and is typically around 50% smaller than an equivalent-quality JPG. A 4 MB JPG might be a 2 MB HEIC. Across thousands of photos that's gigabytes of storage — the whole reason Apple switched to it.
Is HEIC better quality than JPG?
At the same file size, HEIC generally looks slightly better because HEVC compresses more efficiently. HEIC also supports 16-bit colour where JPG is limited to 8-bit, which means smoother gradients and less visible banding in things like clear skies. For most snapshots, though, the difference is subtle.
