Illustrator artwork is vector: paths and instructions rather than pixels. JPG is the opposite, which makes this the right conversion when the destination is a photograph-shaped one — an email, a marketplace listing, a document that will be printed once — and the wrong one when the artwork needs to stay sharp at any size.
Conversion works because Illustrator has saved .ai files with PDF compatibility on by default for many years, so a modern .ai carries a PDF stream that pdf.js can render in your browser. An older file, or one saved with that option deliberately off, has no such stream and will not open here — that is almost always the reason a file refuses.
Choose JPG over PNG when the artwork is photographic or heavily gradient-filled and file size matters. If it has flat colour, hard edges, text, or a transparent background, [AI to PNG](/ai-to-png) is the better target: JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency is flattened onto white, and its compression softens exactly the crisp edges a logo depends on.
