Can you play MKV on an iPhone without converting?
On the phone itself, yes — third-party players such as VLC and Infuse bring their own decoders and will open an MKV that the built-in Photos and Files apps refuse. That solves it for one device and one app, which is enough if you just want to watch something once.
It does not solve the smart TV, and it does not solve sharing. A TV app, a messaging app, an upload form, or AirPlay will still reject the container, and you cannot install VLC on most televisions. Converting fixes the file rather than the player, which is why it is the answer that keeps working after the first device.
Sometimes it's the codec, not the container
Container and codec are two different things. MKV is the box; the video inside it is usually H.264, but on newer downloads it is increasingly H.265 (HEVC) or AV1. If a device rejects the file because of the codec rather than the box, simply repackaging it as MP4 will not be enough — an older TV can play an H.264 MP4 perfectly and still stumble on an HEVC one.
The practical test is quick: convert to MP4 and try it. If it now plays, the container was the problem, which is the common case. If it still fails on the TV but plays on a newer phone or laptop, the codec is the problem, and you need a conversion that re-encodes the video to H.264 rather than one that just changes the wrapper.
